Seafood Services Australia (SSA)
SSA was reaccredited as a developer of Australian Standards for a further three years in March 2009.
SSA was first accredited in March 2006 to produce an Australian Standard for Fish Names to assist building public and consumer confidence in the Australian seafood industry. Confusion over fish names and labelling was identified as a major item of public concern in seafood industry surveys.
The Australian Fish Names Standard AS SSA 5300 was published in 2007 and addresses these issues by assigning one Standard Fish Name for each species. It includes Standard Fish Names to be used in Australia for:
- over 400 commercial and recreational species of fish and invertebrates;
- over 4,000 other finfish found in Australian waters;
- seafood species imported into Australia.
